These pictures all depict algae and mostly date from my final year at
Sunderland. These works are simultaneously figurative, because they all
depict common organisms found in freshwaters and terrestrial habitats in
Britain and Ireland, and abstract, because the subject matter lies beyond
the boundaries of most people’s sense of reality.
The first three images are all of algae common in gardens: a green film scraped from a garden fence, the red crust formed at the bottom of a bird bath and a gelatinous growth on a gravel drive.
